Different kinds of Managers:
1)
Theory
X : The managers
who assume that the people working under them are lazy and are bound to avoid
work if they get a chance. These managers
have a negative approach to eve ything in life.
2) Theory Y : Contrary to Theory X , this management style assumes that the employees are self motivated and are ambitious. This management style also faces difficulties but the Y manager tries to find the root cause and motivates the employees to work accordingly, instead of blaming the employees.
However, we need to be closer to Theory Y in real life.Let's try to understand the implications/results these attitudes can bring in our lives with few examples.
Scenario 1: The Employee is lazy and Manager thinks that the employee is
lazy.
In this situation the employees are lazy and
the manager also thinks that they are lazy and has no faith in them changing
into efficient employees. Here the employees remain unhappy with their manager
and the manager remains unhappy with his/her employees making the work
environment difficult. There is no scope for growth for anyone and in such a
situation the manager becomes responsible for bringing down the organisation.
Scenario 2: The Employee is not lazy but Manager thinks that the employee
is lazy.
In this scenario it is possible that even
hardworking and efficient employees turn into lazy and in efficient employees
because their work goes unappreciated and their efforts are not rewarded. If a
manager does not understand the strengths of his employees and fails to manage
them, making them lose interest which will downgrade their performance and
output.
Scenario 3: The Employee is lazy and Manager thinks that the employee is
not lazy.
He leads by example and he does not lose hope
and faith in his employees and becomes responsible for the organisation's
growth. His task is to lift the standards of his employees to ensure the
desired result is achieved and if a manager is successful in doing so he is an
effective and a successful manager.
Scenario 4: The Employee is not lazy and Manager
thinks that the employee is not lazy.
In this
scenario, manager’s task is easy and not much work is required to be done.
I personally have experienced Scenario
2 in my life:
We had lots of tasks to be completed
and so for few weeks I used to work hard
and sit back late from Monday to Friday. Other team members used to leave on
time and work on Saturdays to complete the pending tasks. But, due to this the
members used to charge the project for travel and meal which was saved in my
case. So, even after performing my business
operations on time, I got an average
rating from my Manager which I challenged. In his defence, he mentioned that I
was not Flexible to work on Weekends, whereas the majority of the team used to
turn up on Saturdays. The explaination was baffling as I had completed all my
tasks and not coming to Office on Saturdays denied me a better appraisal.
